Owl Technologies

Introduction

Owl Technologies Australia's Storm Glasses or Camphor Glasses as they are also known, are based on Fitzroy's Storm Glass he used on the HMS Beagle

Storm Glasses or Camphor Glasses as they are sometimes called, appear to have been invented by alchemists in England in the early part of the 18th century and were sold on London Bridge under the sign of the "Looking Glass". Varying weather conditions cause the crystals contained in the glass to change in quantity and structure. In cold weather the crystals may fill the glass, growing down from the surface as well as up from the bottom, at other times there will be stars suspended motionless in the liquid. In warmer conditions the crystals may disappear altogether only to reappear again when the weather cools.

A beautiful hand crafted Storm Glass. The glass dome measuring 80mm (3.2 inches) in diameter and 140mm (5.5 inches) high is fixed to a polished mahogany base giving it an overall height of 150mm (6 inches).

An example of the delicate crystal formations that can be seen in the Storm Glass. These are described as fern like. Other types observed are in the shape of feathers, leaves, needles, twigs, flakes and stars.

Being free standing and very large, the crystal formations can be observed from all sides and in great detail.
